The Gothic and Greco Cast-Iron Graves of Northern Vermont
Burlington-based scholars Nicholas Brown and Miles McCallum share their ongoing research into these rare and fascinating cast-iron graves that proliferate the northwest of Vermont. The two metal models, one a Gothic revival style, the other a neoclassical style, stand out amongst the seas of granite and marble slabs that dominate mid nineteenth-century New England cemeteries. Their historical significance and meanings are unpacked in both a national mortuary and memorial art context and as telling testaments to particular trends in antebellum Vermont history.
